Paphos Internet Issues

With all of the storms that are around the Paphos area at the moment quite a few people have called us regarding Internet issues and disruptions. The best advice we can give is that if your internet goes off, first try one of two things before calling anyone out.

1. Leave it for a little while – many people around Paphos receive their broadband via a wireless network. If one of the main transmitters acquire a problem due to storm weather, no matter what you try in your own home you will not resolve the problem. Many of the companies are quite proficient at dealing with transmitter issues quite quickly so give it a few hours and see if your internet returns.

2. Try restarting your router and your computer. Turn off all plugs relating to your internet at the power socket for a least 30 seconds (and turn of your PC or Laptop also) and then turn everything except your computer back on. Wait a few minutes then turn on your computer. Quite often IP address issues can cause issues with internet connections and a simple reset of all equipment can resolve the problems. In addition, if you have a MAG box or an Android box for TV, then you should also restart these after restarting your router. This will avoid any IP address conflicts.

If your internet is still not working after trying the above, then give us a call and we may be able to talk you through a few more diagnostic steps to help resolve the problem for you.

Wishing you all a very happy New Year.

Paphos Computers – Repairs, Tips and Tricks

Today’s Tip: Help! my Windows 10 Start Menu is not working!

A common problem with Windows 10 is that at times, especially after your computer has done the dreaded Microsoft Update, users find that when they click on the small Windows icon at the bottom left of the desktop screen, the Windows 10 Start Menu does not pop up.

A possible fix

One possible fix is to reboot your computer into safe mode, click on the Start Button, watch the Start Menu appear (Hopefully!!), and then reboot your computer into normal mode again.  So how do you reboot into safe mode when you cannot access the start menu?

The easiest way is to simply press CTRL, ALT & DELETE at the same time.  This will open up a screen with several options.  At the bottom right of the screen you will see a power icon.

To reboot into safe mode hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and then with your mouse click on the Power Icon and select Restart.

After a few seconds (or maybe more than a few – just keep waiting – and keep the SHIFT key pressed down) another Window will appear.  Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Start Up Settings then Restart.  Your computer will now restart and you will see yet another new screen after the reboot.  Select option 4 from the list (by pressing the number 4 on the keyboard) and your computer will now restart into Safe Mode.

Once in safe mode, login as normal and wait maybe 30 seconds for things to load.  Try the Start Button and if it works click START, POWER ICON, and then RESTART, to restart the computer again.  Hopefully your Start Menu issue will now be resolved.

If your Start Menu still fails to load then you may need to call out one of our Paphos Computer Repair Technicians.  We cover all of the Paphos area and our call outs are free.

(Note: all of the steps above you try at your own risk.  Paphos PC Repair takes no responsibility for any damaged caused to your computer by attempting this DIY fix.)

Tips for keeping a laptop cool in Cyprus

Below are a few tips on how to keep your laptop cool in the Cyprus Sun:

  • Purchase a laptop cooling tray – these are available in local shops like Jumbo, Public’s and even from places like ebay or Amazon. Using a laptop cooling tray is a must. These trays normally have between 1 and 5 fans built into them to keep cool air circulating when using your laptop.
  • Purchase a can of compressed air (sometimes known as an air duster) and once a month give all of the vents on your laptop a quick blast with the compressed air to blow out any dust or fluff. (NOTE: always ensure the laptop is tuned off before doing this)
  • Give your laptop a tuneup up. If you cannot do this yourself get a computer professional out at least once per year to give your laptop a complete tuneup. A computer tuneup will reduce the amount of processes running in the background when your computer is running (plus a lot more things), which in turn reduces the load on the computers CPU, thus reducing the temperature of your laptop and keeping it cooler.
  • Remove any unneeded add-ons from internet browsers. Internet browsers can really increase the load on your laptops CPU depending on the amount of add-ons and other plugins that are running when you start it up. Reducing these can help reduce the load on the CPU, thus helping the laptop to run a little cooler.
  • If the laptop is still running hot after all of the above then you may need to ask a technician to replace the thermal paste in your laptop and check the fan for defects.

No we don’t have a shop. The main reason for this is that in the UK we ran a very successful IT company for nearly 20 years and over this time we found that on many occasions customers preferred us to visit their homes rather than visiting a shop. Some of the reasons included:

1. Customers did not have to transport computer equipment back and forth to a shop to get it repaired
2. Quite often faults were location specific – ie: Many customers experienced Internet or Network issues – these types of issues can quite often only be fixed on-site.
3. Appointments could be made to suit times that were convenient to both parties
4. Parking fees – unlike in Cyprus, in the SE of England parking fees are quite often very expensive and many customers found finding parking spaces in town centres to be quite an issue at times.

Do you offer telephone support?

Yes, give us a call and we will see if we can help you. Sometimes easy fixes can be sorted over the telephone but this obviously depends on the issue been experienced and also the technical ability of the person making the call.

Don’t break your computer

Just a quick tip for those who are new to Windows 10 (especially those who got the forced update to Windows 10 without ever asking for it).

Many customer both in the UK and now in Paphos have mentioned that when Windows 10 installs Windows Updates it can quite often take a long time, and at times it appears that the computer has crashed or stopped working. When Windows 10 first came out the update process did catch out quite a few technicians (the Microsoft Tech Net forums were full of complaints).

Windows update normally follows a three step process (but not always) – step one of the Microsoft Update process normally happens when you are working on your computer. Microsoft will send your computer whatever updates it has available and your computer will begin pre-installing whatever it receives, while you are using your PC / Laptop.

Stage 2 happens when you go to shut down or restart your computer. Most times you will be shown a window which tells you updates are been installed and not to turn off your computer. This stage normally has a percentage counter which during the shutdown process will count up to 30% then your computer will either turn off or restart, depending on what you told it to do.

Stage 3 will continue the percentage count from 30% – 100% and then your computer should load into Windows as normal.

The stage where people often get a little concerned is during the stage 3 process. Quite often at this stage your computer may show a completely black / blank screen with nothing displayed on it at all. This screen can remain for as long as 7 – 8 minutes at times, depending on the update and the specification of your computer. If you leave the computer it will eventually come to life and continue the update process but many customers have become concerned during this stage and have often forced the computer to turn off, believing that it had crashed, resulting in the operating systems file becoming corrupt and the computer becoming un-bootable.

My advice to you is, if you see a black / blank screen during the boot up process, do not turn off your computer – or not at least for the first 10 mins or so. A good indication as to whether your computer has really crashed is to see if the hard drive light on the computer (if you have one) is flickering at different rates. If so, it shows the hard drive is reading / writing and therefore working on the updates it is trying to install.

Should your computer get corrupted or if it is not responsive / non-bootable give us a call.

Encryption Ransomware Removal

Backup your data NOW! Over the last few months several nasty encryption type virus’ have been making the rounds on the web. By clicking on a link, normally on an email, a small program gets installed on computers which encrypts all documents, pics, music and then holds users to ransom by telling them to get their data back they must pay for an encryption key via a ‘deep web’ website.

Our advice is, back up your data onto an external hard drive or cloud service now as the encryption these pieces of Ransomware use are real and in most cases it is impossible to get your data back – and I personally would not recommend attempting to pay the ransom, as by doing so there is a very good chance your credit card will be emptied.

There have been occasions when we have managed to retrieve users data but it is a 50/50 chance and depends on what shadow areas on the computer have been left intact. If you have been hit by an attack like this give us a call and we can try to recover your data for you, and ensure your computer / laptop is clean so you are not attacked again.
